Intimidation - Statement by Sue to the solicitor

INTIMIDATION BY PAULINE GOGGIN

I met Derek Goggin at a visit to his farm with a work college
on 16 October. I was told he was on his own as his marriage had
totally broken down.
He was having to run the farm single handed as he was not allowed
to sell it, and admitted he was having some difficulty, due to the
excessive hours he had to work. He was expecting a casual worker
from south to assist but she had called off at the last minute.
He said he was desperate for help.

My only employment was being terminated, as my employer could not
afford to pay staff, and my rent was only affordable with the
previous salary. I have a married son on the island and my
youngest son working in England.

Derek offered me rent free accommodation in return for some work
on the farm. I cautiously accepted, and moved some of my
belongings into Doehouse on Saturday the 22 October.

We developed a relationship.

On Monday 24 October I went shopping, and returned home to find
someone in the house. I turned the car round and went to
phone Derek to tell him someone was in the house, and stayed
away until Derek left work, we met at Tormiston Mill and
returned together.
The house was empty.

Tuesday 25 I was cleaning the house when I heard a car
arriving.
I went upstairs to the bedroom to keep out the way .
Pauline entered the bedroom, and finding me there, was angry.
She commenced a barrage of verbal abuse, centred on my
character and affirming she was still married, and I was
completely out of order. She called Marilyn Gowland up to
witness I was there.
Hilary, Derek's youngest daughter was also there but luckily
did not enter the bedroom. At no time did I give cause for the
abuse other than being there. She took the phone off the hook
so that I could not summon assistance until she left.
When she eventually left I phoned Derek at work. He left work
and collected me, we returned to the Coastguard Station until
he finished work.

For the rest of the week I ensured I was not left in the house
longer than I needed to be during the day. I could not
therefore assist Derek on the farm while he was at work.
On Friday night I left for a scheduled visit to relatives in
England.

On the 10 November I arrived back in Orkney after an
uncomfortable crossing on the St Ola. I was still feeling
under the weather when I arrived at Doehouse.
Shortly After I arrived, Pauline and her son Jonathan arrived.
Pauline was again unpleasant in a domineering way , she would
not stop talking,This time she was undermining Derek's
Character. Despite being told I have just come from the ferry and was not
feeling very well, she would not stop her offensive dialogue.
She seemed not to be there for any real purpose as she left
with very little but said she would be back the next day.
I made sure I was not around for the following day.

On November 21 while Derek was on leave Pauline arrived, having
previously said she would not call when Derek was in the house.
She was acting in a strange manner, she searched the out
buildings first then entered the house. Derek asked what did
she want, she said it is my house I am entitled to be here.

She walked around the house as if searching for something.
When she had finished her search she came into the kitchen
where Derek and I were having lunch. Her manner was abusive
and I felt very threatened. After her anger was spent she left, leaving both Derek and myself very shaken, I was physically
sick with the tension.

Derek made plans to leave the house permanently to avoid any
further intimidation.
